Packaging is one of the most critical factors in international rice trade, second only to grain quality itself. Inadequate packaging leads to moisture ingress, breakage, contamination and rejection at the destination port. For importers, understanding packaging standards helps you specify requirements correctly and avoid costly disputes.
This guide covers the complete packaging standards for bulk rice exports: bag types, weight specifications, printing requirements, fumigation and container stuffing guidelines.
Standard Rice Packaging Formats for Export
| Bag Type | Weight | Common Markets | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| PP Woven Bag (plain) | 50kg | Africa, Gulf institutional | Most cost-effective; standard bulk trade |
| PP Woven Bag (plain) | 25kg | Gulf retail, UK, USA | Preferred for retail distribution |
| PP Woven Bag (printed) | 25kg / 50kg | All markets | Private label / branded packaging |
| BOPP Laminated Bag | 1kg / 2kg / 5kg | Retail (premium) | High print quality; retail shelf-ready |
| Jute Bag | 50kg | Premium / organic markets | Higher cost; eco-friendly positioning |
| Jumbo / Big Bag (FIBC) | 500kg / 1MT | Processing industry | For mills, flour processing buyers |
PP woven bags (polypropylene) are the global standard for bulk rice export. They offer the best balance of cost, strength, moisture resistance and printability.
PP Woven Bag Specifications
For export-grade rice, the following PP bag specifications are standard:
- Material: 100% virgin polypropylene (not recycled PP)
- GSM (weight): Minimum 70 GSM for 25kg bags; 90–100 GSM for 50kg bags
- Stitching: Double-lock chain stitch at mouth; inner stitching for heavy bags
- Inner liner: LDPE (low density polyethylene) liner recommended for moisture protection, especially for long sea voyages
- UV stabilisation: Required for bags stored outdoors at ports
- Handles: Not standard for bulk; only for retail consumer packs
Mandatory Bag Printing Requirements
Most importing countries and trade regulations require specific information to be printed on rice export bags:
- Product name - variety (e.g., "IR64 Raw White Rice / 5% Broken")
- Net weight - clearly visible (e.g., "Net: 25 KG")
- Country of origin - "Product of India" (mandatory in most markets)
- Exporter name and address
- Importer name - if private label
- Lot/Batch number - for traceability
- HS code - printed on bag (some markets require it)
- Month and year of packing
- Handling instructions - "Keep dry", "Stack max 10 bags high"
Fumigation Requirements
Rice must be fumigated before export loading. This is a mandatory requirement for virtually all importing countries:
- Fumigation agent: Methyl Bromide (MB) - most widely accepted internationally
- Aluminium Phosphide (Phostoxin) - increasingly preferred as MB is being phased out in some markets
- Fumigation timing: Must be done in sealed container or warehouse before stuffing
- Certificate: Fumigation certificate issued by licensed pest control agency - attached to shipment documents
- Validity: Typically 21 days from fumigation date
Container Stuffing Standards
Proper container loading protects the cargo during the 10-25 day sea voyage:
- 20ft FCL capacity: 24-26 MT (depending on bag size and stacking)
- 40ft FCL capacity: 26-28 MT (not significantly more than 20ft for rice due to weight limits)
- Dunnage bags / airbags: Used to fill gaps and prevent shifting during transit
- Moisture absorbent liners: Recommended for humid sea routes (India-Africa, India-UK)
- Stacking: Maximum 10 bags high for 50kg; 12 bags high for 25kg
- Container inspection: Containers should be inspected for moisture, odour, and structural damage before stuffing
