Analysis by Distribution Channel in Benin

Cotonou Wholesale Market (Dantokpa and surrounds)

At Cotonou's major wholesale markets, 50kg is the historical standard. Wholesalers buy and sell in 50kg bag units. Their porters and handlers are accustomed to this format. Switching to 25kg in this channel can create resistance. If your direct customers are Beninese wholesalers who redistribute in bulk, stay with 50kg.

Re-export to Nigeria

The Nigerian market strongly prefers 25kg. Nigerian traders crossing the Sème border or transiting goods prefer 25kg for several reasons: easier to transport by motorcycle and light trucks, simpler to sell at local markets where end buyers purchase one bag at a time, and less exposed to quantity control issues. If you re-export to Nigeria, 25kg is clearly better.

Retail Distribution in Benin

For distribution through grocery stores, supermarkets and small shops in Benin, 25kg is more suitable. A 50kg bag is too heavy for most retail points of sale and difficult for a single seller to handle. The 25kg sells more easily as a single unit and offers a more accessible price point for small traders.

Institutions (NGOs, Catering, Large Buyers)

Institutions (humanitarian organisations, military, corporate canteens, large hotels) generally prefer 50kg to minimise packaging costs and simplify warehouse storage. In this channel, handling is organised with appropriate equipment.

Private labelling is the best investment for a Beninese importer who wants to escape price wars. Instead of selling "generic Indian rice", you sell your brand small - which lets you build customer loyalty, command a slightly higher price, and create long-term value in your market.

Our Recommendation by Importer Profile

Cotonou wholesaler: 50kg PP woven, plain or simple branding. Priority on price and volume.

Nigeria re-exporter: 25kg PP woven, with or without branding. Ease of transport and sale.

Retail distributor or supermarket supplier: 25kg BOPP laminated with your brand. Better presentation, better margins.

Mixed strategy: Order one container in 50kg for wholesale + one in 25kg for retail. We can deliver both formats within the same order.

FAQ small - Rice Packaging for the Beninese Market

Can both formats (25kg and 50kg) be ordered in the same container?
Yes, but this slightly complicates documentation (two lines on the invoice, two lines on the packing list). It is feasible as a co-load in the same container, but we recommend separate containers when volumes allow for cleaner documents and simpler customs clearance.
What is the additional cost of 25kg packaging vs 50kg?
25kg packaging costs approximately 15–25% more per tonne than 50kg, because twice as many bags are needed and twice the packing labour. However, the per-kg resale price in 25kg is typically 5–10% higher in West Africa, which more than compensates for this extra cost.
What is the difference between PP woven and BOPP laminated bags?
PP woven (polypropylene woven) is the standard bag most used in rice trade small - strong, economical, acceptable for all markets. BOPP laminated (bi-oriented polypropylene) has a glossy plastic finish that allows high-quality printing (photos, vivid colours). It is more expensive but gives a premium look ideal for supermarkets and high-end private labels.
How long does it take to produce bags with my brand?
Once you provide your design file (logo, colours, text in high resolution), bag production takes 5–7 working days. This is added to the normal order preparation lead time. Send your design early to avoid delaying the shipment.
Is private label available for small quantities (less than one container)?
The minimum quantity for private label is 1×20ft FCL (approximately 24–26 tonnes). Below this quantity, the cost of producing printing plates is too high to be commercially viable. For smaller quantities, we offer standard bags without custom printing.
