FAQ — Indian Rice Varieties for Africa

Which variety is easiest to sell in Benin?
IR-64 parboiled 5% broken in 25kg or 50kg bags. This is the variety the Beninese market has known, demanded and consumed for decades. It is the safest choice for a first-time importer. Once you master this market, you can explore long grain white and other varieties.
Is there a difference between IR-64 (India) and IRRI-6 (Pakistan)?
Yes. IR-64 is the Indian variety, grown mainly in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Karnataka. IRRI-6 is the Pakistani version from the same genetic origin, grown in Pakistani Punjab. Both are similar long-grain parboiled rices but with slightly different grain profiles. In the African market, both are accepted, but Indian is generally cheaper.
Can multiple varieties be mixed in a single order?
Yes, but each variety must be in its own container or, if co-loaded, in clearly distinct bags with separate lots. On documentation, each variety appears as a distinct line on the invoice and packing list. We recommend starting with separate containers for each variety to simplify customs clearance.
Which variety offers the best margin for a Beninese importer?
By volume, IR-64 parboiled offers the best turnover and therefore the best overall margins. By unit margin, Basmati 1121 offers higher margins per tonne, but volume is much lower and the market more demanding. For a beginner, IR-64 parboiled remains the best balance of volume/margin/ease of sale.
Does Draba Ventures export all these varieties?
Yes. Draba Ventures exports all varieties mentioned in this guide: IR-64 parboiled (5% and 100% sortex), RNR Samba Masuri, Sona Masoori, Long Grain White, and Basmati 1121. We are based in Sindhanur, Karnataka — at the heart of India's RNR and IR-64 production belt. Contact us for a quote on your chosen variety.
